About Arts Bridge

My name is Tyrel Hanby. I am a post-baccalaureate student at BYU. I received a BFA in animation from BYU in 2011. After working for a while in 3D animation, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in Art Education.
I heard about the Arts Partnership and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to practice teaching art as well as helping bring art into elementary school classrooms. I firmly believe that art not only helps to foster creativity in children, but by integrating art into the teaching of the other subjects, we can increase learning and retention in those subjects.
As an Arts Scholar, it is my job to work with an elementary school teacher to integrate art into their curriculum and help teach artistic principles at the same time. I have been fortunate to be paired with Ranae Black from Alpine Elementary. Mrs. Black is excited to have art brought into her classroom and I am excited to help do it. Together we plan to use art to cement the learning of Utah State history as well as begin to touch on aspects of science, such as animal adaptations.
My goal is to use art to strengthen the learning already taking place in Mrs. Black's classroom and help the students gain an appreciation for art. To do this, I will be visiting Mrs. Black's class every Tuesday starting on October 15th. This will last until mid-December, hopefully December 10th. During these visits, I will choose an art project designed to reference the material that had been covered in class as well as introduce the students to principles and techniques used in creating art. The medium for the projects will also be chosen to engage the students in different ways to create art and hopefully play to their creativity and imagination.
