Animal Adaptations
Grade
Level:
4th Grade
Objectives:
The students will learn about animal
adaptations and how those adaptations manifest themselves in an animal’s
appearance.
The students will design and draw their
own made up animal using what we have learned about animal adaptations.
The students will experiment with paint
as they create a habitat for their animal and paint their animal’s body.
The students will learn about basic clay
manipulation and construction by sculpting their animal using Sculpey based on
their drawings of their animal.
Materials
Needed:

Pencils
·
Paper
·
Jell-O boxes (or
a light 3X4 box)
·
Masking tape
·
Tempura paint
·
Sculpey polymer
clay
Procedure:
·
Talk with
students about animal adaptations, giving examples of adaptations and what they
are for.
·
Discuss animal
habitats and their influence on an animal’s adaptations.
·
Discuss different
types of adaptations, allowing the students to give examples and their ideas of
how those adaptations help the animal.
·
The students will
fill out a worksheet to help them create their own made up animal.
·
Using the
information from their worksheet, the students will draw their animal.
·
Explain basic
principles of sculpting with clay and demonstrate how to manipulate it.
·
Have the students
sculpt their animal and bake them afterwards.
·
Demonstrate how
to use tempura paints and explain how the students will paint a habitat for
their animal.
·
The students will
paint a habitat for their animal using a Jell-O box, tempura paint, and the
information from their worksheet.
·
Have the students
paint their animals with tempura paints.
Assessment:
·
Did the students
fill out the worksheet?
·
Did the students
use the worksheet to create their animal?
·
Does the
student’s sculpture resemble their drawings?
