Below are the questions that I had the students work through as they thought up their animal. They didn't have to answer all of the questions, but I wanted it there to help them think of how their animal might look depending on the circumstances of its survival.
My Animal
What
does your animal eat? Does it eat meat, vegetation, or both?
How
does your animal move? Swim, two legs, or four legs?
How
does your animal hunt or hide? Does it have camouflage?
How
does your animal protect itself? Does it have a shell, spines, toxin, or
something else?
Does
your animal live in a forest, desert, mountain, marsh, lake, or somewhere else?
Does
your animal have sharp or flat teeth?
Does
your animal have fur, scales, feathers, or something else?
Does
your animal swim a lot? Does it have webbed toes?
Does
your animal have a long tail, a short tail, or no tail?
Does
your animal fly?
How
big is your animal? How much does it weigh?
